THE DROP-OUT PREVENTION PROGRAM (Helping Youth Stay in School)

The Drop-Out Prevention Program effectively combines a school performance of Los Desertores/The Dropouts with workshops and informational fairs to present and address the issue of dropping-out. The T.I.E. program is a school-based program, implemented in predominately intermediate schools and high schools, consisting of the following activities:
• Twenty-minute classroom workshops facilitated by artist-teachers to engage students
and faculty in a dialogue about the dropout issue and the importance of education.
• A dramatic and powerful presentation of (Los Desertores/The Dropouts), a bilingual musical
play about six high school students and their choices of staying in school or dropping out.
• A theatre forum/post production workshop about the play, themes and characters.
• A "Teacher’s Resource Guide" which includes curricular and extracurricular activities that follow
the presented theme.
• Informational materials for parents on how to identify the attitudes of a potential dropout and
alternatives to motivate the student to stay in school.
The T.I.E. Program is aimed toward schools and communities with high dropout rates and is a comprehensive drop-out prevention program designed to:
- Encourage a spirit of innovation within schools that is inclusive of learning experiences beyond the school walls
- Promote the value, importance and rewards of education
- Motivate and challenge young people to stay in school
- Facilitate linkages and partnerships between students,
youth serving organizations, educational institutions and
the labor market.
